Heal at the Core with Herbal Medicine

to Enjoy a Life of Balance, Abundant Health, Energy, and Well Being

Herbs affect the Qi and promote healing in one or more systems of the body. Usually herbs are combined into formulas that address the main health problem and support the mind-body system.

Eileen Karn L.Ac, DPL.CH is board certified in Chinese Herbal Medicine and Western Herbal Medicine. She understands how to use herbal medicine as the main therapy or combined with acupuncture and other modalities to achieve your treatment goals.

At your first consultation, Eileen will ask a variety of questions regarding your specific complaint and your general health, take your pulse, and look at your tongue in order to form an Oriental medicine diagnosis. Health depends on the free flow of energy, called Qi (“chee”), and the interplay of the body, mind and spirit. When disease occurs, specific herbs are chosen to rebalance the energy and allow the body to heal itself. Eileen is also well-versed in the use of herbs from the European and North American herbal traditions. She draws upon the wisdom of various traditions and her clinical experience to match the needs of her clients.

Eileen administers herbs as teas, tinctures, capsules, or pills. The Chinese herb teas are made from concentrated granular extracts, easily dissolvable in fluid. The benefit of this method is that the formula, usually composed of between 8-12 herbs, can be customized to the patient’s particular condition

Below are some of the many conditions that Eileen has successfully treated and may be addressed through Herbal Medicine:

  • Respiratory Conditions such as colds and flu as well as chronic respiratory conditions such as allergies, asthma, emphysema, sinusitis and bronchitis
  • Emotional Conditions such as anxiety, depression and mood swings
  • Gastrointestinal Condition such as acute or chronic diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, gastritis and ulcers
  • Urogenital Conditions such as urinary difficulties, prostatitis and sexual dysfunction
  • Gynecological Conditions such as irregular or painful menstruation, infertility, PMS and menopausal symptoms
  • Musculoskeletal and Neurological Conditions such as neuralgia, migraine headaches, insomnia, dizziness and low back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Circulatory Conditions such as hypertension, angina, arteriosclerosis and anemia

Supportive therapy for other chronic, painful and debilitating disorders such as hepatitis and fibromyalgia.

Herbal medicine is a powerful method of healing. Western drugs are usually used to control symptoms but do not alter the disease process. For example, antibiotics kill bacteria but do not improve a person’s resistance to infection; diuretics drain excess fluid from the body but do not improve the kidney function. Chinese herbs can rid the body of disease but they also nourish and balance the body in very specific ways, thereby improving organ function and building up a person’s constitution, immune system and organ functions.

THE THREE TREASURES

Tonic Herbs support the 3 Treasures, a traditional name in Asia for the three fundamental energies of the human body. The three energy categories are Jing, Qi (pronounced chee) and Shen.

JING, the first treasure, is translated as Regenerative Essence, or simply Essence. Jing energy is fundamental to life. It is the deepest source of energy in the body, and is associated with our genetics. Jing controls regeneration, longevity, youthfulness, deep long term vitality and is the source power for the reproductive system, skeletal system and renal system.

Jing energy is depleted by stress, excessive behavior and overwork. Jing energy can be replenished through the consumption of certain rare tonic herbs, which are said to contain Jing.

The second treasure is QI, translated as the vitality, or the energy of life that we acquire through breathing and eating. Qi manifests as our day to day vitality.

Qi tonics are divided into Qi (energy) and blood tonics. Qi tonics fortify the digestive, respiratory and immune functions that are necessary for health. Qi tonics also help build muscle and muscular strength. Blood tonics help build blood and nourish all the tissues of the body.

The third treasure is SHEN, the energy of consciousness and awareness. Shen is often translated as Spirit. Shen is the stability of the mind and the vitality of the human spirit. A person with strong Shen is one who is calm and at peace,, strong minded, clear, centered and happy. Certain herbs have been found through the centuries to enhance the Shen energy. Shen tonics generally have a mild calming effect. When combined with other tonics, Shen tonics have a profound effect on our state of body and mind.

Step up to superior herbs and enjoy the benefits of the great empowering tonic herbs.
